Reshaping Sherman
Projection Mapping Installation
2023
Madmapper | Module8
Reshaping Sherman is a projection mapping project featuring the reconstruction of Cindy Sherman’s photography series. On three objects - newspaper, shirt, and film roll - new moving-image versions of Sherman’s works are projected in different shapes and dynamics.
ABSTRACT
Majorly on textures of newspapers and a shirt, the project provokes thoughtful reflections on concepts of identities, feminism, and artificiality.
Newspaper: Based on the concept from Untitled Film Stills, I created videos focusing on the ever-changing environments, Sherman’s identity as an artist, and the audience’s identities.
Shirt: By outlining the shape of women’s breast and creating projection inside, I want to discuss about feminism and artificiality.
Film roll: Reflection of the original works, like a shadow. The film roll is the origin of Sherman’s photography.

RESEARCH
A. Artist Overview
Cindy Sherman is an American Artist who always experiments with different identities through the medium of photography. In her best-known series Untitled Film Stills(1977-80), Sherman put on guises and photographed herself in various settings with deliberately selected props to create scenes that resemble those from mid-20th-century B movies, and those images rely on female figures In her later works, she highlights the artificiality of ready-made fabrications, a metaphor for the artificiality of all identity construction. Until now, Sherman still keeps producing artwork and posts them through Instagram.
B. Artwork Interpretation
B&W photography- Untitled Film Stills: Just like her construction of identities, everyone can be anything, anytime, anywhere.
Colored photography: Besides the concepts of identity disguise and feminism, also includes topics about artificiality and replica of oil paintings.
INTERACTION
**this part does not work well in the dark environment because of the lack of light.**
Since Sherman’s work emphasizes the concept that “everyone can be anything, anytime, anywhere”, in one target object, I want the audience to interact with the installation by putting an image of themselves inside Sherman’s photograph, therefore I need a webcam to present the live video.
1. I cut out the face outline for one signature photo and put the webcam image below the photo layer to create a photobooth sense.
2. I tried with the webcam first, but it cannot work in a dark environment without another spotlight. And I found that MadMapper can automatically pair my iPhone camera as a live input.
